Buying a home
Should I rent or buy?
The short answer
Run the honest comparison: unrecoverable costs on both sides. A quick check is the 5% rule — if annual rent on an equivalent home is under 5% of its price, renting is competitive. Time horizon matters most: under about five years in the home, buying's one-time costs usually outweigh its benefits.
